Formerly called Mediterraneo Film Festival, in 2016 the event changes name and becomes Carbonia Film Festival. CFF takes place every other year in the city of Carbonia, in south-western Sardinia, hosting international competitions both for feature- and short-films, special events, exhibitions, music concerts, masterclasses. CFF presents the best of the international film production on the topics of labor and migration, be it fictional or documentary. Among the winners of the last edition: “El futuro perfecto” by Nele Wohlatz, “Il respire encore” by Anca Hirte, “Cameraperson” by Kirsten Johnson, “La Fille du patron” by Olivier Loustau.

Starting from 2017 CFF promotes Carbonia Film Festival presenta “How to Film the World”, four days of happenings in which international directors will come to the Sulcis region to meet the public and a group of students and young professionals, selected through the Bando Programma Cinema Giovani.

Headquarters of CFF is the “Fabbrica del Cinema”, a project promoted by Società Umanitaria and CSC Carbonia, which aims at educating young generations to the valorization of the local audiovisual heritage and at the same time encourages their acquaintance with the cinematographic language in its most advanced forms.

From 1999 to this day, CFF hosted among the directors Laurent Cantet, Soudade Kaadan, Giuseppe Casu, Phaim Bhuiyan, Edoardo Morabito, Sabrina Iannucci, Margherita Panizon, Khalik Allah, Ciro D'Emilio, Ben Russell, Mahdi Fleifel, Olivier Loustau, Nele Wohlatz, Michele Vannucci, Ali Hammoud, Valia Santella, Irene Dionisio, Davide Ferrario, Alina Marazzi, Cecilia Mangini, Salvatore Mereu, Leila Kilani, Daniele Gaglianone, Silvia Luzi e Luca Bellino, Bonifacio Angius, Felice Farina, Marina Spada; actors like Mariam Al Ferjani, Alessandro Borghi, Vinicio Marchioni, Milena Mancini, Valentina Carnelutti, Riccardo Scamarcio, Valerio Mastandrea, Isabella Ragonese, Claudia Gerini, Ivano Marescotti, Francesco Pannofino, Libero De Rienzo; and finally musicians such as Coma_Cose, Rachele Bastreghi, Bob Corn, Godblesscomputers, Jolly Mare, Massimo Zamboni, Danno (Colle der fomento), Lilies on Mars, Baba Sissoko, Calibro 35, Nada, Pierpaolo Capovilla.

Carbonia Film Festival is organized by Centro Servizi Culturali Carbonia-Iglesias della Società Umanitaria and by Cineteca Sarda, under the patronage of Comune di Carbonia and of Regione Autonoma della Sardegna, with the support of Fondazione Sardegna Film Commission.
